Butterfly mantissa

Lately these ears have been more attuned to the ambient-drone-experimental end of the spectrum. But the exuberance & intelligence of Floating Points - one of LMYE's 10 'emerging' artists of 2009 - still stands out, a kind of future boogie (you might even call it neuroscientific, given his day job) constructed on a fuzzy warmth/dryly crisp pairing of fat, burbling synths, compelling shuffle-rolls & claps (perfected in the gauzy Esthian Three), & endearing frills like the glowing Peroration's suite of Clangers whistles, the loping, squirming near-breakdown of his Make Me Stronger remix, that ethereal voice on the exemplary K&G Beat, & the acidic ripples of Peoples Potential...

Ancient and modern

Like Cabaret Voltaire reimagined by Sbtrkt or s p a t i a l, T++ delivers ghostly, fluttering distortions freighted on bone-dry beats for a release that apparently signals the end - of this Profrock persona, at least...

"The T++ project bows out triumphantly, with its most expressive, energetic and fully-realised work. Snapping 2-step garage rhythms are at the heart of all four epics. Notwithstanding the distress, deconstruction and detournement they undergo, the spirit and swing of the British soundsystem tradition is unmistakable. Pan-galactic preamble

You know Four Tet, of course, & can hardly fail to have taken in the gargantuan, pan-galactic reach of & adulation for There Is Love In You. But as a preamble to a long-overdue (& largely finished - no, really...) piece on the neuroscientific boogie of Floating Points & a reminder to self that Angel Echoes remains a delicately tasty treat - here's the swirling, gently epic FP remix of Sing plus a rather more ferociously epic live deconstruction of AE (alongside a lo-frills version).

Hear its future garage briskness (all ultra-tight loops, cries & keys - look at that waveform) while you can - Luke tends to whip tracks up on to SC & down again faster than Kun Aguero in pursuit of a defence-splitting Riquelme pass...

Dusty roses

The new Floating Points? All the long & improbable way from future garage to neoclassical-inflected quasi-ambient, Roof Light covers a prodigious amount of ground. The stately, crackling Trenches, Riverbeds And The Weigh Path Sill may be his best track, though its breathy 12 minutes could probably do with an edit. In an utterly different vein, the frisky, clicky Cherise is a tasty, spacious treat too..."I just really like all kinds of music".

The next four minutes...

I've heard the future. It's not even a whole track, but to these ears the second half of s p a t i a l's 90729 (on his own Infrasonics) is the year's most forward-looking, next-level, game-changing [insert additional cliches of choice] dance record.

No, really. Forget Hyph Mngo (great though it is). When 90729's pan-galactic low-end announces itself at 3:00 precisely, we're being signalled the thrilling sound of contemporary bass/garage in mid-morph.

Flicking either side of its implacable, lurching core, flitting into & instantly out of its voice snippets again while accumulating an ever more clattering, clicky percussive momentum, the next four minutes tell us what this music is supposed to sound like next.

The plinkily swinging 90807 & brisk, blithe Creative Commons goodie 90731 aren't too shabby either...

NB: s p a t i a l himself (featured previously on LMYE here) is rather more modest about 90729. In an exchange with LMYE before this weekend's Infrasonics rave, he was quick to shrug off any comparison with the more overtly ecstatic Hyph.

New York Trilogy

In the third post devoted to the New York sound, we go back to 1970 when DJ David Mancuso held his first party at The Loft and laid down the blueprint for the modern club. The track Life on Mars by Dexter Wansel is taken off the classic compliation David Mancuso Presents the Loft and I don't know if it's a joke but there's a used copy of this CD going for $999 on Amazon. Perhaps eBay or your local record store would be a better option. Both The Loft and Nicky Siano's The Gallery were big influences on Larry Levan, who became resident DJ at the Paradise Garage in 1977 and took disco towards house and garage. Listen to Can't shake your love from 1981 by Syreeta Wright (Stevie Wonder's first wife, who went on to sing the truly appalling "With you I'm born again" with Billy Preston). While not being his most famous mix, it's a good example of the Levan approach as he builds up the groove from a conventional disco beat and gives each element just the right amount of space, even allowing a second of silence before Syreeta unleashes a high pitch squeal.
