Plenty compiled

Late? Indisputably. But we can't let 2020 go without acknowledging a raft of outstanding compilations that, like our recent Festive Twenty, succoured these ears over a challenging year.

The list numbers a baker's dozen. It mostly comprises conventional collections of a single label's output, though one collects disparate pieces from a single artist. It also includes a mix confined to a single label, which seemed both eligible & worth celebrating too.

Along with two further instalments (initiatives that went beyond a single release & an alternative 20), the list helps broaden the Festive Twenty. As emphasised, the Twenty makes no claims of 'best' but is rather what resonated most with us when we recapitulated the year (subject to the restriction of one pick per label/artist, for each contributor's list of 10).

Besides the deliberate restrictions to maximise inclusiveness, we no doubt overlooked many compelling candidates.

This is the same. In contrast to the Twenty's democracy, however, this list is largely the responsibility of jl - though with al's helpful input.

Several of the releases benefit health, social & environmental charities. Others simply showcase the work of labels or individual artists - including the ultimate meta release in this territory, a vast compilation of compilation tracks...

The longest pick contains over 100 tracks; the shortest, nine. Most are pay what you want. None is more than $10 (for the digital version, anyway).

One was released on New Year's Day 2021, while another (along with a single artist mix that would also have been included but for the 'one pick per' hairshirt) was originally available as a crowdfunding reward for a 2019 campaign. This list is unflinchingly claiming both for the year just gone, all the same.

Mea culpa corner: LMYE, er, compiled a list of outstanding 2019 compilations too, but failed to publish it at the start of 2020 when life (or death, strictly speaking) got in the way. Still not sure how to resolve that failure, but this list - which features several labels who also graced the unpublished list - is a first down-payment on doing so.

Building A Better Reality: A Benefit Compilation (JMY)

Distant Lights Receding (TVO)

Gap In Time (Dronarivm)

Healing Sounds II: A compilation for those in need (Past Inside the Present)

Decayed down-payment

As last year, sneaking in a first instalment of the Festive 33-1/3 before midnight...

Besides each selecting 15 releases that stood out especially for us over the year, subject as ever to the recognition-spreading/hair-shirted restriction of no more than one per artist/label, we highlight a quartet of works that go beyond the confines of a single album.

Separating them out like this gives some additional prominence merited by their ambition & scale.

This year's four comprise:
Various Artists :: Place Language (Fluid Audio
Various Artists :: Various Artists (eilean 100) (eilean
Various Artists :: CRXSINGS (self-released)

Ben Vida :: Reducing The Tempo to Zero (Shelter Press

To be sure, the year brought other deeply worthwhile larger-scale projects. But these four resonated particularly vividly with our ears...

Free from fear

This blog inevitably shares the online bias towards shiny newness, but with the conflict in Yemen still killing & maiming children please find some cash for Dronarium & hibernate's exemplary Salaam for Yemen (released last December) if you haven't already...

A raft of artists from the LMYE pantheon contributed to this fine, genuinely charitable ("100% of profits raised from this album will be donated to War Child") compilation. Its 26 tracks include compelling work from Giulio Aldinucci, Anjou, Anthene, Phillipp Bückle, Ekoplekz, Hotel Neon, ISAN, Aaron Martin, Mind over MIDI, Moss Covered Technology, offthesky, øjeRum, Olan Mill & Pausal.

Wonky & balanced

"playfulness, aggregation of detail & detritus into constructs that are somehow both wonky & balanced...naivety, experimentation, spontaneity"

Lend Me Your Headphone

Even in an era of mega-compilations, Headphone Commute's ...and darkness came is a giant. Not just for its epic scale, though at 87 tracks its self-description as "colossal" is an un-hyperbolic statement of fact, but for its ambition: "to benefit all of those affected by Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, which has devastated portions of the Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States in late October 2012."

Specifically, HC will donate "100% of all the proceeds generated from the sale of this album." Beneficiaries are The Humane Society & the US arm of Medecins Sans Frontieres

The compilation costs $10 - 11.5 cents a track, value hounds. Though you can also opt to pay more.

Is it any good? The question of quality may seem in poor taste when the cause is exemplary or irrelevant when the price is so modest. But the contributors anyway include an alluring raft of LMYE alumni, including Lawrence EnglishEzekiel Honig (solo & with Mark Templeton), Erik K Skodvin, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Simon Scott (solo & in a quartet with Corey Fuller & Marcus Fischer, who also features solo), Kane Ikin, Kreng, Machinefabriek, Celer, loscil, ScannerBlack Swan & Radere - some with exclusives to satisfy trainspotting impulses...

Probably very pompous, but: commended

Lend Me More Shorts

Still under the gun (& staying there for another four weeks), but to keep our collective hand (& ears) in: a quartet of compelling pieces harvested a while back, slackly stacked in draft...

Featuring Marcus Fischer (whose lulling  Unrecognizable Now project - including a fine album for Kesh, Two Rooms - will be covered here soon-ish...); Celer (among whose inevitable torrent of releases since our last post his unexpected - & unexpectedly frisky - series of collaborations with Machinefabriek are particularly notable &, again, due coverage here 'shortly'); & Nobuto Soda & Chihei Hatakeyama, both in what I'm guessing are new partnerships (with Danny Clay & Asuna, respectively).

By happy coincidence, the Hatakeyama/Asuna was due to be released today. Other sources have it already out at the start of this month, but as that would mess with the synchronicity let's agree it didn't happen...

Anyway, back in what passes for full in late September.

Marcus Fischer - A Fifth Season

CELER - Voluminous Files of Multi-colored Lines / AM Arrest and Conclusion

Danny Clay, Nobuto Suda  - in search of may apples - Part 1

Chihei Hatakeyama + Asuna - Scale Compositions (album preview)
