Predetermined streets

The brilliance of so much of the Comatonse back catalogue ('unusually queer releases...since 1993') tempts me to a painfully exhaustive, anoraky exploration. A no holds barred version'll have to wait for another time, but refocusing on her/his endlessly engaging music this week demands at least another quick look.

Although it also features some productions of cohorts (hoping to feature one of these shortly...), Comatonse is mainly a repository of work by Terre Thaemlitz in a variety of guises - TT, DJ Sprinkles, Kami-Sakunobe House Explosion (K-S.H.E), Terre's Neu Wuss Fusion et al. Hear a series of his/her scintillating & deeply moving - in every sense - reappropriations of deep house below.

"Today's dancefloors are wakes in remembrance of a mythological era of openness that never was. Remember where you were. See where you are.... I'm in Kami-Sakunobe."

"direct social action

is more than slogans penned on cardboard

and carried down predetermined streets

to the endless beats

of trite rhymes

spoken out of times when

a crippled left wing soars with the right"

""Stripped and minimal.... New York.... Newark.... Chicago.... Toronto...? These are reconstructed memories of the sounds embraced by late '80s underground House culture.... Particularly among Latinos and African Americans.... Queer.... Tranny.... Fierce.... Ova.... Ovaplayed...? Quickly subjected to cultural decontextualization and commercialization.... A decade passes.... Now this.... Possibly an attempt to decommodify a musical era.... Probably yet another form of communal exploitation."

Filmic II

ZvA

Filmic future

Rude not to dept.: meant to stick up those gloopy, vampy
fragments of ZvA (Zomby/Actress)'s filmic future funk the first time they were in circulation - but now they're back it'd be, etc...

Untitled by ZOMBY ®

Update: turns out they never went away (still here, unlike this SendSpace-spanked one - though it too can still be snaffled here & below). So the streams above are in at least some sense new...

ZvA > #1 > #2 > Nothing

"Recently a couple of tracks you worked on with Zomby emerged on your blog. Are there more to come? Maybe…we talk a lot, and sporadically play with ideas, but that’s about it for the moment. My only impression of Zomby is informed by the music he has written…most of which is pretty special."

More of the painfully fashionable but also often compelling & distinctive Actress sound courtesy of trus'me here, The Fader (source of the quote above) here & in the vid below. Bring on Splazsh!

Unfestive conclusion

So, a bathetic ending to the pathetic fallacy of LMYE's by now distinctly unFestive 50: a companion to our 20 labels of 2009 & top 10 sources of music discovery* in the form of our 20 artists of the year. Plus, given the discomfort of picking out an arbitrarily small group when LMYE exists to highlight all the less obvious music we love, an inevitable hedge: 10 more 'emerging' artists whose excellence we twigged during the year (often years too late, but anyway...).

Note that, apart from their inspired music, this list celebrates artists who typically cranked up their impact through other initiatives & efforts
- running a cutting-edge label (Deupree, Sprinkles), creating compelling music on a new platform like the iPhone (Scanner), delivering genius mixes/remixes (English, KMS, Klimek, Sprinkles), collaborating far & wide (Baker, TRR), using 'free' creatively (Klimek, LJK, Monolake, Willits) - &/or sometimes just by the power of their example (The Necks' decade-plus of collective improvisation, Basinski's pioneering, Celer's fecundity, Erstlaub & Skelton's single-mindedness...).

*not including blogs like this one that mainly deal in commercial releases

Post features an exclusive LMYE hack of extracts of DJ Sprinkles' new Masturjakor. More tracks, hacks & profiles/rationales of the top 20 to follow in, er, due course. No, really...

Curators/custodians/compilers

We noted the exceptional Type as LMYE's label of the year recently - but need to acknowledge more outstanding sound curators/custodians/compilers that were also key in helping shape our listening year.

At the risk of sending the pomposity/self-importance dial off the gauge, they start with four more highlighted labels that had a particularly intense impact here. An additional 15 who all also made a consistent difference bring us up to a top 20 - though this is a wholly arbitrary number, of course, & many other labels are also bringing out great music across a host of genres & styles; we try to acknowledge some below as well.

Implicit in all of this is the well-rehearsed idea that despite all of technology's lowering of barriers to entry labels remain important - perhaps more than ever. When we're flooded with new music their role as visible exercisers of taste, as rallying points, as cultural lenses, seems to really matter. Certainly, it still does to LMYE...

kranky > LMYE's larger label of the year: like Thrill Jockey (see below) only more so: meaning incredible vigour & new avenues even after all these years - especially this, this, this, this, this & this (& still thinking about this...) [previously/more/more] >> Tim Hecker > Visiting An Imaginary Country [LMYE hack] (from An Imaginary Country)

Low Point > LMYE's new discovery label of the year: consistently excellent & now making smart Type-style use of SoundCloud streaming - especially this, this, this, this & this [previously] >> Gareth Hardwick - Versions of Aversions [LMYE hack] (from Aversions)

12k/Line
> LMYE's 'staggering consistency' label of the year: an unflagging succession of exceptional releases, whether from its rich Australian connection (see Room40 below), label head Taylor Deupree himself or other sources - especially this, this, this, this, this, this, this & this [previously/more/more] >> TU M' - Monochrome # 03 (from Monochromes, Vol. 1) [re-up]

Anticipate > LMYE's 'if only they would release more' label of the year: regrettably few releases but always a source of, er, anticipation & excitement - especially this, this & this >> Klimek - Movies is Magic minimix (from Movies is Magic; NB: higher-res version available from Anticipate)

Mogul reinvention

Now that Allez-Allez are reinventing themselves as recording artists & industry moguls, they're getting the remixers in.

You'll have heard Shackleton's epic Sometimes in Autumn Harmonia/Eno remix for their Amazing Sounds [head here immediately if you somehow haven't]. The paired Appleblim/Komonazmuk's By the Riverside completes this week's white vinyl (!)/download release & is also on Allez's recent AS mix - featured here in last month's round-up of Tweeted mix treats (& also including Allez Sam's Walls collaboration).

Now Allez's fine debut, Defeatist, is also out (via Kickboxer - a Kompakt relative, apparently). It's offered in a host of flavours on top of the fierce original - justly self-described as "a growling analogue peak time stormer". LMYE's most partial to the distantly ringing Ricardo Tobar version.

But the package excludes an awesome ambient krautronica version by Somfay - so much to admire in his sustained 10-minute Doubled Up Foldable Iona Rarity (whatever that is!) excursion : that affecting, plaintive organ line, the skittery, ultra-dry beats, the subtle tensions & sense of bare containment, the swelling clouds of noise, the bell-rung ending...

Bonus: Somfay > Bristlecone (from somfay.ca)

NB: higher-res versions available here & here. Plenty more Somfay on Soundcloud & (with his Archipel co-conspirators) archive.org.

Blissy tricks

No, it's none too minimal - & no less delicious for that. The techno cognoscenti may not rate Luciano's Tribute to the Sun, but to these ears Sun, Day and Night is a superbly zestful, percussion-drenched treat for a Sunday: languid yet propulsive, studded with blissy tricks, claps, whacks & sparkle...

Update: as for the rest of the album, I've only heard Celestial, Hang for Bruno & Metodisma so far. Although the hang showcase never recovers from its rapid degeneration into sub-Herb Albert cheese, the other two (notwithstanding a self-consciously 'celestial' interlude on the otherwise bone-dry former) exhibit a crispness & invention that belie Tribute's fairly sphincter-clenchingly awful cover...

Upwards reification

Add a new one to the charge sheet of LMYE's many iniquities & inadequacies: never mind self-importance, over-writing, infrequent posting, ill-defined coverage & a hair-shirted stance on unauthorised music, our tagging sucks.

A batch of tracks posted here in the last year have lacked the right ID3 tags to get picked up properly by blog aggregators. There may well be others even more ineptly managed, but this lot are verified.

So in a spirit of enlightened masochism (!), here they are again (with the usual painfully sincere apologies to subscribers for re-upping) - but better this time, hopefully...
