"drugged out rodents"

Granted, an Aidan Baker or thisquietarmy version (or for that drone-metal matter Mandelbrot - launching new HPLL album on Thursday night, by the way...)
might have been preferable for a bit more edge. But this Banjo or Freakout remix of the Allez-Allez spin-off Walls - in which BoF is also a partner (please keep up!) - still generates enough blissy reverbed traction to remind us how fine Burnt Sienna & the Pantha du Prince/Field remixes were & stoke our clamour for the new album (stream)...

Hanseatic redeployment

The perfect shimmering depth charges of Pop Ambient 10's Sound of one lip kissing may indeed be the best ever
Marsen Jules track. But the lush enveloping & breathy accumulations of the new Yara & recent Lazy Sunday Funerals remasters on Oktaf (stream both in full below, including three bonus tracks for trainspotters like LMYE) run it pretty close at times - fairly flawless voicings of the stately, reflective MJ sound...

In some moods I might think it'd be improved (refined, even) by a little less perfection, a bit more grit & urgency, or extremity. Maybe. At its weakest it can be cloying.

But ultimately that's a prescription for something else, another music from outside
the distinct, hermetic Jules/Juhls universe.

Mogul reinvention

Now that Allez-Allez are reinventing themselves as recording artists & industry moguls, they're getting the remixers in.

You'll have heard Shackleton's epic Sometimes in Autumn Harmonia/Eno remix for their Amazing Sounds [head here immediately if you somehow haven't]. The paired Appleblim/Komonazmuk's By the Riverside completes this week's white vinyl (!)/download release & is also on Allez's recent AS mix - featured here in last month's round-up of Tweeted mix treats (& also including Allez Sam's Walls collaboration).

Now Allez's fine debut, Defeatist, is also out (via Kickboxer - a Kompakt relative, apparently). It's offered in a host of flavours on top of the fierce original - justly self-described as "a growling analogue peak time stormer". LMYE's most partial to the distantly ringing Ricardo Tobar version.

But the package excludes an awesome ambient krautronica version by Somfay - so much to admire in his sustained 10-minute Doubled Up Foldable Iona Rarity (whatever that is!) excursion : that affecting, plaintive organ line, the skittery, ultra-dry beats, the subtle tensions & sense of bare containment, the swelling clouds of noise, the bell-rung ending...

Bonus: Somfay > Bristlecone (from somfay.ca)

NB: higher-res versions available here & here. Plenty more Somfay on Soundcloud & (with his Archipel co-conspirators) archive.org.

Forestry equipment

Mystery, menace, enormity: Gas > Zauberberg V (from Zauberberg, Mille Plateaux & also the monumental Nah und Fern re-issue compilation, Kompakt).

Tectonic cathedral

Reasons to be, well, 'cheerful' may not be quite right - but new Tim Hecker is always welcome: after the monumental Fantasma Parastasie with Aidan Baker (one of LMYE's 31 Albums of 2008), the no less immense, organ-driven Sea of Pulses [or lower-res here].

From An Imaginary Country - due on kranky in March, apparently. Or February, possibly...

The lighter - even pretty - Shosts in Silver also out on Kompakt's Pop Ambient 2009 next month, in any case. Hear it here.

Sweet forget-me-not

Allegedly an exemplary piece of schaffel, Michael Mayer's Amabile (from Touch on Kompakt) is anyway a brilliantly syncopated, exquisitely taut, twinkling - &, yes, in a way, time-shuffling - bleep-fest...

Note to self: will have to find room for MM [perhaps his almost equally awesome track X] in a new instalment of LMYE's recent-ish fantasy remix series (here, here & here so far).

Ambient drama (re-up)

Self-evidently, drama isn't often a big feature of the ambient end of the electronica spectrum. This burbling, rolling remix of MIT's German teen yellathon Rauch by Luke Abbott (blog) of Border Community shows that it can be, though...

Get the self-proclaimed "minimal electro-punk bleep fest" original & both the Abbott version & a far more upbeat, Kompakt-style mix by Coma here.

Buy new MIT album Coda here. & Abbott's Tuesday EP at Border Community or here. & Coma's debut 12" here.

Layered & orchestrated (re-up)

Two beautifully layered & orchestrated pieces of poptronica: Closer Musik's yearning, rattling Departures (from After Love, Kompakt) & Lusine's bubbling, backwards Flat for You, remixed by Matthew Dear [perhaps a bit generous with the vocal, but inspired anyway...] (on Podgelism, Ghostly International).
