Reasonableness

That time Asha Puthli sang (gorgeously…) for Ornette! & later with Ornette's subsequent Prime Time bassman Jamaaladeen Tacuma...

Also a wild take by The Thing's Mats, who has a fine version too with (yes, really) Neneh Cherry - whose step-dad played on the 'Science Fiction' album where it first appeared & later explored the track (whose original he sat out from) with Bobo Stenson et al & separately with Nana Vasconcelos & Ingrid Sertso!

The Neneh/Thing got some trans-Nordic remix action as well, while she & her brother featured on a Swedish album that had a go at it too (though without them, regrettably).

Oh, & there's a whole Italian strand - from that, the Sabina Meyer-sung Agus Collective take.

Finally, if you do Spotify an ultra-nerdy collection of 'WRCIG's...

Apartment humbug

Compellingly detailed post-modern space rock from Fredrik Ness Sevendal's FNS (MySpace / Discogs), forthcoming on Miasmah (one of LMYE's 20 labels of 2009).

Fred:
"This project is me all alone. I also play in bands like Slowburn, DEL, Kobi, Lucia, Marmont, Children & Corpse playing in the streets, GOM, Softrebels, and various other constellations. I have also collaborated with Makoto Kawabata (Acid mothers..), Mitsuru Tabata (Zeni Geva, Marble sheep), Mark Francombe (Ex Cranes guitarist), Bill Wood (1/3 octave band). It's both lo-fi pop, weird folk, noiserock and free-noise. Common for all the projects is the homespun lo-fi production, tape hiss, lots of different instruments and sounds sources, and a big part of the music is always improvised. Much of this has been released on various formats."

FNS - I think she´s asleep

"Tracks from the forthcoming album by FNS (aka Fredrik Ness Sevendal) out april 5th. Mastered by Helge Sten at Audio virus labs."

Bonus:
Fredrik Ness Sevendal > Gamle Gudbrand / Dog Alone Home (both from No Holy Fow, Apartment/Humbug)

Fooddelayeyebrow

Rude not to department (continued): to sort-of commemorate an event I missed last week, guttingly (predictably great reviews here & here, though), a pair of post-jazzings in somewhat Nordic style - floaty, layered, ruminative - with delicious percussive underpinning in one case & a nicely splintering scratchy counterpoint in the other...

Giveaway also includes an edit of Vladislav Delay's Melankolia (previously covered here).

Food > Khymos (from Molecular Gastronomy, Rune Grammafon)

Eyebrow > Desire Line [edit] (from Desire Lines, self-released)

Expanded reification

Should have known better: yesterday's post dredged up a batch of neglected tastiness from LMYE over the past year, but still failed in its goal of bringing exposure to one of the previously untagged tracks.

Bugge Wesseltoft's hefty live collaboration with Sidsel Endresen & Nils Petter Molvaer on the staggeringly lovely River had the wrong sampling frequency last time out (gnashes teeth, wails). Still, it's now been crimped back accordingly - & is definitely worth your time, however galling the carnival of re-ups from here...

Bonus tracks (all from artists featured yesterday): Bugge Wesseltoft > Somewhere in Between (from New Conception of Jazz, Jazzland)

Bugge et al (Aissa Tåby/Audun Erlien/Thomas Strønen/Elouar Michy) - Never Met Before (Live at Belleville Oslo)

Audion > I Am the Car (from I Am the Car, Spectral Sound)

Never before, never again

Having frothed up more hyperbole here about The Bays than any other artist, arguably (this & this, for example), LMYE was fairly invested in their recent classical collaborations. Happily, despite the vast scope for it to degenerate into toss with strings, adding most of an orchestra to the live-improvisation, 'music at the moment of its creation' project only cranked its bravado & wonder even higher.

The combined band isn't as nimble as the quartet, of course. But with a pair of string & wind composers writing a stream of fresh music that gets sent instantly to the classical players' screens (Wagamama, please try to keep up...) in a real-time response to The Bays' bleeps & beats & a brilliantly nonchalant conductor holding it all together, the juggernaut somehow pulls it off.

Proof? Try a storming extract from this event, which featured both the Heritage Orchestra & Norway's BIT20 Ensemble, as well as grand-standing pianist Neil Cowley: Integra 2008 (LMYE hack) [longer, lower-res version here; full performance here].

Posten Norge

Having so far failed to get anything together on Monday night's solo Jarrett 'stravaganza (excellent reviews here [with LMYE tagging along] & here [without], though...) & having missed out on Punkt UK, infuriatingly, a diversion into Norwegian post-jazz.

Kornstad's Tempelhof is an oddly guilty pleasure - a trancey, horn-adorned rifforama given away to fuel his Single Engine of last year.

Kornstad is also in the sometimes excellent Wibutee. Here's a nicely brisk & blobby remix of their Playmachine by the, er, sometimes excellent Scanner - his version of Tempelhof would be worth hearing...

Saving the best for last - & getting some Punkt in through the back door - Jan Bang & DJ Strangefruit (last featured here in the company of Nils Petter Molvaer) trip out with the loveable Bugge Wesseltoft for 10th anniversary live antics: Belleville Session.

& Bugge explores his soulful side, anchored by Sidsel Endresen & NPM: River.

Lots more live Bugge & co-conspirators here, by the way.

Now, about that Arve Henriksen album on ECM...
