Noisy channel

LMYE's Under the Radar Label of the Year exerted an ever-increasing influence on these ears as 2011 ground on. So much so that by the end of the year Dekorder's often thrilling, usually genre-defying output would come to claim large chunks of the imminent 'Festive 50+50' of releases that mattered most to us this year...

Even with label chief Marc Richter's outstanding Coldplay, Elvis & John Cage surfacing elsewhere (En/Of), the highlights of Dekorder's 2011 curation were a match for anyone's - the drama, intensity & invention in Ensemble Economique, Alexander Rishaug, Stephan Mathieu, Keith Fullerton Whitman/Alien Radio, Machinefabriek & Gareth Davis, Xela, Astral Social Club & Datashock (in parts) were exceptional.

EE's Heat Waves & KFW's 101105 were two of  2011's most notable tracks. Mathieu's ravishing To Describe George Washington Bridge 10" added valuably to his immense year. Xela's The Sublime (a reissue of a Digitalis tape from last year, pedantically speaking...) gave a subtle but hugely powerful conclusion to an important trilogy of LPs. Rishaug's Shadow of Events was only a half share of his two delicious releases during the year (or perhaps three-quarters, since the other was a collaboration with Svarte Greiner), while  Hauer & Davis were their unfailingly gripping selves on the long-form Ghost Lanes.

& there's still more (this, for example) to hear!

Protein den

C30, C60, C90, Go! Well, sort of, since Matthew Sullivan's Ekhein (SoundCloud) has yet to exceed 60 minutes on what is now more than a half-century of cassette releases
- & has brought them in as short as 12, despite seeming to traffic mainly in billowing, meditative long-form drones & other excursions.

The label releases Sullivan's own output (Earn, Privy Seals) & that of both some of his countless collaborations (1958-2009, Necklacing, Genius Females, Protein Den) & a cohort of luminaries (Keith Fullerton Whitman, Sean McCann, Greg Davis, Rene Hell).

Below stream extracts from & Experimedia previews of the label's five most recent tapes - KFW at his most delicately affecting, in a kind of soundtrack to a long-surpassed idea of space travel; two batches of Earn's gossamer romance (one live, dating back a couple of years, the other just posted tonight...), plus McCann's rich, dense 'orchestral miniatures', & Davis's austere warmth.

Aide-memoire

A hopeful refry of LMYE's ultimately unsatisfying earlier attempts (also this) at 'curatorial' posting: an aide-memoire compilation of 10 mostly new releases (plus one for luck) that I've yet to hear but want & mean to, by artists I - &, in some cases, we - rate or am interested in hearing - fixed here against the relentless onward rush of time & tasks, preserved for chewing over later...

NB: all streams taken from Experimedia's exemplary album previews...

Candlewax oligarch

Whatever else it is - a mesmerising piece of pulsating, shimmering live 'playthrough', most obviously - the Keith Fullerton Whitman work in progress 2011.4.18.11.21.32 is (unsurprisingly) no loping dubsteppery. Boggling at its SoundCloud tag, the literal-minded still await a take on the genre from KFW - who after all has some kind of dance music form in his Hrvatski guise (though not lately, admittedly - they may be waiting some time).

Anyway, recorded 'live to "glass"' - whatever that means - just this Monday (perhaps the second half of the title is the time it was taped?), the piece provides some kind of self-riposte to his striking recent comment that "now that it [generator] has run its course, i've yet to come up with a "next step" that doesn't tread over the same old ground; i'm uncomfortable with the endless recycling of materials that i suppose make up a "career" in music ... at least enough to shy away from performance opportunities that don't offer something new and/or truly sympathetic to the spirit of furthering things."

Context: "generator is over ; it was exactly a year in the doing, during which i learned a ton about approaches to live electronic music that don't essentially involve lying to your audience; an experiment which helped clear the air & lent much to my own mental stability..."

Note also that this year should bring "an lp for the "no" label covering the final two "generator" performances (i.e. my solo sets at high zero 2010 & the "propensity of sound" festivals, taking place exactly one day apart & offering two completely separate variations of the piece that i consider the definitive versions)."

"... here's a little video documenting a series of recordings I've been carrying out in the home studio (aka Much Wenlock) utilizing electric guitar & a few different configurations of guitar pedals (here the chain goes :: Fairfield FourEyes -> Moog Ring Modulator -> Visual Sound Visual Volume -> Strymon El Capistan -> Boomerang III -> Strymon BlueSky, with expression pedals controlling the FourEyes SVF frequency, the Ring Mod's carrier frequency, and the El Capistan's delay time) ...

this comes pretty close to what I've been going for :: a muted, aleatoric musique concrète approach to "live" guitar music, with little in the way of traditional "guitarisms" ... to me it sounds like something that would have been broadcast on the RAI in 1956 ..."

While we're here...
